US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find another source of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.
