The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezing appliances in an flat in western Austria.
The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for several months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a false wall in the flat, located in the city of Innsbruck.
A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the Syrian woman, told authorities last week that there had been an incident—but disputed homicide.
Addressing journalists previously, a spokesman for the legal authorities announced the brothers were being kept in custody on "strong suspicion of murder".
Personal details of those implicated have been withheld by law enforcement, in compliance with local legislation.
The family's disappearance was first reported by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.
Police said the male associate informed them at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her child to travel to her relatives in Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then noted as being active overseas on multiple occasions.
But when police searched the victim's residence, her smartphone was located.
Someone also reported hearing a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and shouts of "mama" on the day the pair were believed to have vanished.
An expanded police investigation was started, with investigators discovering various messages originating from the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her employer and communications to the male colleague.
Officials said a four-figure sum was also sent to the man.
The head of the State Criminal Police Office stated to media representatives on recently that a storage facility had been secured before the vanishing and a cooling unit had been placed there.
The male siblings removed the cooling unit from the facility on the date the mother and daughter disappeared, she revealed. And a shortly afterward, they obtained a second unit.
Investigators state they consider this indicates the demise were intentionally orchestrated.
"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the remains," the official said.
The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the exact sequence of events is still unclear, but the bodies were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.
While the suspects were arrested in June, it was only on 12 November that the suspect confessed to an occurrence and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any plan to cause death, officials stated.
At the same time, his brother admitted to a concealment but denied awareness of a killing.
The two suspects are currently in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in separate locations, situated at a distance.
In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the swift and cruel conclusion of two human lives and exposes a cruel system".
"Female individuals are being killed due to the sole reason that they are female," they went on to say.
"Femicides are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must fight resolutely."
