The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
