Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
