A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.

The reason of the shooting has not been established and no arrests have taken place, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building near the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the property supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," authorities confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what resembled a security uniform firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but fell down a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the attack.

Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the scene.

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have have information to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and police have been tracking them to establish their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

Family and Public Reaction

His family member, Nicole Stock, said the loved ones are reeling to understand the tragedy.

"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the public to refrain from sharing explicit content from the scene, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's children.

In a statement, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, warmth and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
