Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad

England have opted for a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.

Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.

In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.

At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.

Spin Options Considered

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.

But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
