The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
