Well, what did you think of this year in your family? Was it all as good as you pretended on social media? Packed with A-grades for the kids and wild costume birthday parties for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a sea of disappointment with only rare enjoyable highlights? Could any part be actually real, or have we all become seven-fingered AI slop beings with unrealistic dental work?
I have gathered everyone for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the crucial thing in twelve months: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Let's get started:
Just Dance 2024
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my definitive list."
In the mobile realm, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into acting, but when she took a break from vocals, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to build character so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that endlessly add to their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the start. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after evening drinks.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the effects behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an absolute high-water mark of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I mentioned how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that verbatim, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a punishingly tough exploration-focused thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or endless scrolling, but it burns like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the end of days.
The Witcher 4.
