The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop this new product within a personal collection highlighting issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company

This latest development intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders have claimed that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support

Mr. Cohen revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement and Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
