The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
